Microsoft Authenticator is a mobile app that provides an extra layer of security when you sign in to your Microsoft account and other supported apps.
Here's a simple guide on how to install and set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone:
Step 1: Check Compatibility
Before you begin, make sure your phone is compatible with the Microsoft Authenticator app. You can typically find this app on both iOS (iPhone) and Android devices. Ensure that your phone's operating system is up-to-date.
Step 2: Download the App
- Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) on your phone.
- In the search bar, type Microsoft Authenticator and search for the app.
- Look for the official Microsoft Authenticator app (developed by Microsoft Corporation) and click on it.
- Tap the Install button to download and install the app on your phone.
Step 3: Set Up Microsoft Authenticator
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app after it is installed.
- You will be prompted to allow the app to send notifications and access the camera. These permissions are necessary for the app to work properly, so tap Allow when prompted.
- On the welcome screen, tap the Begin or Get Started button to start the set-up process.
Step 4: Add an Account
- The app will present you with options to add different types of accounts. You can add personal accounts (like your Microsoft account) and work or school accounts that use multi-factor authentication (MFA).
- Choose the type of account you want to add. For a Microsoft account, select Personal account and for work/school accounts, select Work or school account.
Step 5: Sign in to Your Account
- If you selected Personal account, you'll be asked to sign in with your Microsoft account username and password. Follow the prompts to complete the sign-in process.
- If you selected Work or school account, you might be redirected to your organisation's sign-in page. Enter your work or school credentials.
Step 6: Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
- After successfully signing in, you'll be prompted to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA). This can include methods like phone notifications, verification codes, or biometric methods (fingerprint or facial recognition).
- Choose your preferred method(s) of authentication and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.
Step 7: Verification and Backup
- Once you've set up MFA, you may receive a verification code on your chosen method (e.g., notification or text message). Enter the code in the app to verify.
- The app might also prompt you to set up a backup method in case your primary method isn't available. This can be useful in case you lose access to your primary device.
Step 8: Account Added
- After successfully setting up your account, you'll see it listed in the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- You can repeat the process to add more accounts to the app.
